This one is a fun one for all the Yogis of the world… and what with the practice of different types of Yoga certainly growing in popularity worldwide and the first annual ‘International Yoga Day’ happenings this week certainly acknowledged this.
Ivan Stanley is a passionate Yoga instructor and practitioner with over 15 years of training and experience. As part of this weeks fun activities worldwide, the Indian expatriate who is now based in Dubai, UAE decided to go one better than most and to maintain one of yoga’s most difficult poses for 61 minutes continuously and claim a new world record for the world’s longest sirsasana (headstand).
He attempted the feat as a tribute to his journey through yoga, on the occasion of the first ‘International Yoga Day’. His feat lasted from 09.05 am to 10.06 am (UAE time) and the above video highlights one of those 61 minutes.
41-year-old Ivan Stanley has taught Yoga at prestigious places and international events around the globe, but chooses to still describe himself as a student.
“Shirsasana is considered the king of all asanas, and it is a constant challenge for practitioners. As a lifelong student of yoga, this attempt is part of my swadhyaya or self-study – a conscious decision to elevate myself well above my comfort zone.” he told us.
According to Stanley, several things tied in together:
“The rulers of the UAE have declared 2015 as ‘Year of Innovation’, and the prime minister of India has placed yoga on a global platform. This homage to yoga underlines my gratitude to both these great countries that I call home.”
Ivan Stanley’s attempt at the world’s longest headstand was witnessed and recorded by more than 35 people including local and international media, in a high-rise in Dubai’s Jumeirah Lakes Towers.
An advertising professional, Ivan has been a resident of Dubai for the last 15 years, and says that the innumerable benefits of yoga can be discovered by anyone, and at any stage of their life.
“My personal belief is that YOGA is an acronym for Your Own Greatness Achieved.”
He urges interested individuals to try and find their own greatness with yoga.
