What motivates individuals and groups anywhere in the world to pursue what most mere mortals would consider an extreme, or even impossible challenge to achieve? Is it the glory? Or is it something that exists beyond oneself that just needs to be done. This month, two Brand New World Records were conquered and set on the streets of London and a crowd of family friends and community supporters all gathered to witness it.

The glory hunters were the self-proclaimed: “World’s Most Toughest Couple”, Black Belt Taekwon-Do masters Chris and Lisa Pitman of London, UK.

Smashing their way as the officially verified new world record holders, Chris, a 2nd Dan Black Belt, competing to beat the current men’s record of breaking 314 wooden boards with his bare hands in the space of 1 minute, and his wife Lisa, a 7th Dan Black Belt hoped to beat the current women’s record of 155 boards.

With a great performance in front of the crowds by both, each exceeded both records with a breath-taking and adrenaline-charged performance, as can be viewed in the video below:

Looking fully focussed and determined, Chris Pitman broke 315 boards beating the previous record by 1, whilst Lisa, equally unwavering, broke a whopping 230 boards with her fists, (OUCH!!!) and beat the previous record by a whopping 75 boards! – and all to a cheering crowd and also in front of an official Guinness world record adjudicator, at the Bishop Challoner School, in the borough of Bromley in London.

“It was really tough,” said an exhausted yet jubilant Lisa, after the event.

“Chris and I had broken tiles before, but nor pine boards so it was quite different, but the main thing is that we did what we set out to do and it’s very satisfying.”

Very much echoing Lisa’s thoughts, Chris told Newsivity:

“Taking the world record gives you a tremendous sense of gratification and achievement, especially as we’ve wanted to do this for quite some time and have been training for it. Then to have a situation, where we, as husband and wife, could do it all in one afternoon is like a dream come true!”

Post-event celebrations continued at sponsor Shampan’s flagship restaurant Shampan at the Spinning Wheel in Westerham, where the couple signed the boards and were presented with certificates.

Sufian Miah, Shampan Group Director who helped sponsor the record attempt added:

“This was an immensely exciting event. My team and I are so pleased for Chris and Lisa. All their hard work, determination and tenacity have paid off. They are an inspiration to all of us.”

The married couple are certainly two tough cookies, and long may they reign as world record-holding champions in their chosen arts.. and be sure to watch this space as we have a feeling this may not be the last of their record ‘breaking’ challenges to prove their self-proclaimed status as ‘the toughest married couple on Planet Earth’ ..
