A.Yamasato for #Newsivity
Moses “Mo” Hamilton is a very talented and inspiring artist who was born in Ha’ena on the island of Kauai‘s spectacular north shore. Self-taught, he rediscovered his passion for art and started painting by mouth after a car accident in 2002 that left him paralyzed. He just recently turned 39 years old and counts himself a very lucky man following that fateful day many years ago now.
He conveyed to us how he was driving home from work when he crashed his car. The accident took his life towards a very unexpected direction, and brought new challenges along the way including limited mobility of his upper body. But it was through this journey that he also found a new lease of life, and an enhanced outlook on the world around him.
For several months immediately following the crash, Hamilton even needed the assistance of a machine to breathe. When his ventilator finally was removed, Hamilton had to learn how to breathe again and continued to spend much time in hospital. Much like being reborn from both a metaphorical and physical aspect.
Prior to the accident, Moses lived like most of us, but his philosophy and outlook were a little more carefree. It is certainly quite common for most of us to get caught up in our daily routines and the less important aspects of our place in world, and the realisation that life is truly much shorter than we recognise is something that is a useful reminder in order to ensure we live fully.
“Make the best of this moment now because it’s quick and it’s short. You just never know when it could all be gone.” he told us.
“All those years ago, in the snap of a finger, my whole life changed and so now I ensure I live fully and happily!”
The good news is that while in Rehabilitation Hospital he was introduced to an art program that taught people how to paint with their mouths – a talent he utilizes to this day with incredible results.
“Being artistic as a child, I was naturally interested in the program,” he says.
He paints with an expressive and loose style that carries a touch of impressionism, using bold colors to create strong and colorful pieces of art inspired by his Love of Life, Music, the Ocean, the beautiful backdrop of Hawaii and the ethnic diversity of the region. Painting mostly with acrylics but also playing with other mediums such as oils, digital, mixed-media and watercolors gives him a full voice to express his artistic spirit.
“Painting helps me feel very connected to my environment, and the outside world. With my art I feel I still have a strong connection to the physical world and I love to share my great love and zest for life with my creations.”
Interacting with Moses, his positive outlook and strong spirit is truly infectious and we felt that he advocates a universal message we can all learn much from. It’s why we wanted to share his story and we would encourage everyone visiting the region in Hawaii to make sure they look out for him painting in the great outdoors of what is a paradise location with a very picturesque backdrop.
But don’t forget the key message advocated by Moses… learn to live your life fully and as happily as can be!

Special thanks to our good colleague Aaron Yamasato and of course Moses Hamilton himself for inspiring us as much as he did during our interaction.
